On Sunday, I tried to “ring your bell” a little bit… I issued a “wake up call” to the church that God wants you back, and to return to becoming the people God has designed us to become.
Did you have specific takeaways from that message?
Have you experienced the “old man” rearing his ugly head in your life? In what ways does this happen to us?
I know it is easy to think that it is just you… But you aren’t alone! Paul struggled with this same issue himself:
I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.
Romans 7:15 NLT
I love that… Can’t you see Paul looking into the mirror asking, “what is it with you? I don’t even know who you are!”
He goes on to write this:
I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.
Romans 7:22-23 NLT
Do you ever feel like you are fighting some kind of civil war inside yourself?
Paul also wrote out a prayer for the church at Ephesus…
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.
Ephesians 3:16-17 NLT
Man, that is my prayer for you as well.. That God would strengthen you to GUARD THAT OLD MAN. That you would easily recognize his crafty, deceitful, manipulative ways, and that you would win your battles, taking back ground from him, your enemy.
Does that kind of feel like a little bit of an identity crisis for you? It should. I know there are times that God has spoken about some particular sin in my life, but my old man justifies it, tries to convince me that it is okay to keep it going in me. Does that happen to you?
ON Sunday, I contrasted our “Covid Zombie” state with being the “light of the world, a city on a hill.” Do you agree with me on that, or disagree?
What lies have you been believing about your identity that keep you from being the life-bringer, the light-bringer that Jesus wants you to be?
Where do you most need God to strengthen you today in your inner self?
