What Did Characters From The Bible Look Like?

Photographer James C. Lewis wasn’t satisfied with the primarily white casts of most religious film and art, even though in reality they were all of Middle-Eastern and African descent.   His new “Icons Of The Bible” photo series presents them in a new light

His work features 70 models who identify as Asian, Native American, Hispanic, African, Middle Eastern, Black American and West Indian.

“I think it is very important to see one’s self in the Scripture so that it may become real in their eyes, The whitewashing of the Bible has always bothered me. However I’m happy to now have the opportunity to give a different point of view.”

Lewis says he isn’t aiming for absolute accuracy, just trying to introduce a “splash of color” with his “creative embellishments.” I think his work is captivating.  What do you think?  Let me know in the comment section below. His work is on display now through February in Atlanta.
