It was bound to happen! Everyone had told us that we would have bedrock issues on our property. The soils surveys indicated the same thing.
Sure enough, in trenching to get the storm drainage pipes from one structure to the other, the team has HIT THE BEDROCK. This isn’t that brown shale-like, easily breakable rock that we are used to seeing up there… This is actual granite sitting just below the surface.

We’ve had a couple of large hammer machines brought in, so they can break up the rock and get it out of there. Even with the larger of the two, this process is VERY SLOW, and has definitely slowed our progress. Ian Duncan says they have been able to dig out as little as 20′ of horizontal length in an entire day.

This really is an amazing process to watch, but it is slow, slow! Ian is watching very closely and keeping a good log of daily rock breaking progress.
