Our First Few Days In Kolkata

I had to resist the urge to get up.  The sun hadn’t risen yet, and even though my hotel room is on the 5th floor, the incessant honking of the cars below was keeping me awake.  My phone told me that it was just before 5AM local time, but my body was still adjusting from Eastern Standard Time. I just couldn’t sleep any longer, so I tried to read while waiting for our morning meeting, which wouldn’t happen for another four hours.

I’m expecting the day to be slow, anyway.  The band will be practicing most of the day, and I will be putting together some sermon material. Yesterday, I found out that I am preaching at a couple of local church services and a school this week. I wasn’t planning for this, so I will spend some time today preparing a message for them.

Taking the 1/2 mile walk down to the sandwich shop, where I can watch the crowds walk by while I work on my messages, the traffic noise is only louder.  Chaos is definitely the rule in the street, where you’ll find a mix of pedestrians, busses, cars, cabs, rickshaws, dogs, and even a goat or two. It is complete pandemonium, and their driving style is enough to give just about any American a heart attack.

Our real work begins here in a couple of days, so for now, I thought I would just update you with a few photos of what I’m seeing around me as we move around in the city.
