John 15:1-3 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

There are two clearly different parts that Jesus identifies in this passage… Vine and Branch.  How do we mix these up?

Jesus says that his Father prunes the fruit-bearing branches.  Why?  What happens when those branches are not pruned?

John 15:4-5 ESV
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

What is the difference between “disciples” and “christians” in Jesus’ mind?

So.. Jesus says disciples “abide in my word.” Let’s think about that for just a minute. What does it mean to “abide” in something?

So, I “abide” in Ellijay, Georgia. What does that mean for the way I live? For the places I go? The things I do? How I shop? Where I drive? Where I work?

IN thinking this way, what might it mean for me to “abide in the Word?”

Psalm 119:9-11
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Joshua 1:8-9 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
