How many different churches have you either visited or been a member of? How were these churches alike? How were they different?
What are some of the things that you believe and practice as a Christian that differ from what other Christian friends believe and practice (i.e. baptism or certain spiritual gifts)?
Have any of the differences ever caused tension or division between you? Explain.
A popular maxim found in various places throughout Christian history is this:
“In essentials, unity; in doubtful matters, liberty; in all things, charity.”
Do you think that is helpful? Why?
Mark 9:38–41 (ESV)
John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
On Sunday, I showed how John really interrupted the theme Jesus was setting up. What is that theme? (hint: Mark 9:30-37)
Some commentators suggest that John didn’t like this, and he was trying to “change the subject.” What do you think? Why would John interrupt Jesus’ train of thought this way? (note: Jesus jumps right back to his theme in verse 42)
Do you think we often have what we believe to be Godly agendas that are mis-aligned with God’s actual agenda for us?
How can we discern when we are out of alignment with His plan?
So, what types of things divide us from other believers? (a few mentioned in the first set of questions, above) Why do you think we get so focused on these secondary issues?
What final point of application does Jesus make in verse 40 and 41? How does it apply to us today?
