Baptism and Communion simple illustrations that have real depth and power.

If you are paying attention.

So many believers just breeze right past these impactful illustrations without letting them sink in and make a real difference in their lives.  In this very short message, I try to open the window just a little bit on the depth found in these two ordinances.

Life group Discussion Questions below!

Let’s be honest.. We all like the really short message, don’t we?

If only it were all that simple.

The great thing about both baptism and communion is that they are so very simple, yet there is so much depth and power there… But you have to pay a little attention.  Have you ever been in a worship environment where baptism and/or communion was taken for granted?  What was that like?

Why do you think we do this?

I love what baptism represents… It clearly demonstrates what Jesus has done for us.  It shows the EVENT of our salvation.

Titus 3:5-7
he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

1 Corinthians 6:9, 11
Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves… Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Romans 5:1-2
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

Romans 8:33
Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.

Psalm 103:12
He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.

But… Baptism also demonstrates what Jesus is doing in us on an ongoing basis. It also demonstrates the PROCESS of our salvation.

Romans 12:2
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

2 Corinthians 3:18
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Colossians 3:10
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.

Why is it important to remember that salvation is both an EVENT and a PROCESS?

Why do you think some churches teach that you should be baptized only once in your life?

Are multiple baptisms okay?  Why or why not?

Have you taken the first step of obedience by being baptized?
